Letter from Dying Groom draws inspiration from the story of Rowden and Leizl whose wedding video went viral several days ago. They originally planned to wed on July 8 in time for Rowden’s 30th birthday. However, after Rowden’s diagnosis of stage 4 liver cancer last May, they had to expedite the wedding date to accommodate the groom’s dying wish to be wed to the love of his life. Rowden passed on to the other life less than 10 hours after he uttered his vows. He is survived by his wife Leizl and their daughter Zakiah.

This letter was written by the Letter Writer.

My love,

The first thing that came to my mind when I learned that I was terminally ill was how am I supposed to fulfill my promise to bring you to the altar on July. I cannot bear to see you disappointed and sad. We have so many dreams to fulfill, so many stars to reach, and so much love to share together.

I thought to myself this cannot be happening to me…to us…but it is. I am growing weaker by the day no matter how hard I try to psyche myself that I can get well, that I will get well for you. There is a voice inside me that is saying I am near my earthly end.

I am writing this letter so you can read my words of love to you even when I’m gone. When you find yourself doubting even for one second that I love you, you have my words here to assure you. I love you and my only regret is that we haven’t met sooner so we could have started our life together earlier.

Thank you for saying yes to be my wife in spite of my condition. If our wedding will be the last memory of my life that I will bring with me, I couldn’t ask for more. I just wish that I can do all the things that a groom is expected to do on his wedding day. I would have liked to be standing at the altar waiting for you, looking at you as you walk down the aisle.

If in case I will not be strong enough, I may have to ask you to come to me while I lie in my hospital bed. I hope you will not mind very much.

I know I told you that I will be with you forever. Forgive me for breaking my promise. I didn’t mean to.

Keep my love forever in your heart where I hope it will always be. Whatever we had will never really be lost. Keep going, keep living, not only for us but for you.

With love that goes beyond life,

Letter Writer

  5. So hard to read stories like this because you always want a happy ending to every family. You can also see how unconditional the love Liezl has for Rowden too.

I wonder if he has a separate love letter to his daughter as she was not mentioned at all in the letter?

    • Teresa Martinez says:

This letter is actually a fictional one inspired by a real story, which I wrote as I try to approximate what the dying groom’s feelings could have been. I purposely did not make any mention of a daughter in the letter as I was intending to zero in on the love of two people for each other. You just gave me another idea when you asked about the letter to his daughter, will probably do that as well in the future.

Sorry I got confused. That’s a great idea to make another one for his daughter this time 🙂
