A Letter of Resignation is about the letter writer’s intent to leave a job position currently held thereby serving as a formal notice to an employer of such purpose. Providing a resignation letter is one of the necessary steps that have to be taken ┬áby employees to facilitate smooth transition from one company to another.

Basic Letter of Resignation

Most of the time, a basic resignation letter is sufficient.

Dear Mr. or Ms. X:

This is to inform you that I am resigning from my position as Marketing Executive of ABC Company, effective the end of this month August 30, 2013.

My tenure with the company for the last five years has given me valuable experience and has been largely instrumental in both my personal and professional development. Thank you for the opportunities that you have given me. It is a privilege to have worked for this company.

I would be most willing to provide assistance in the transition should it be needed in any way.

Very truly yours, Signature Name

Resignation Letter with Explanation

It is possible that an employee resignation will require further explanation. These may include sudden resignation due to illness in self or family, immediate need to relocate, acceptance of job position from another company,or possibly to formally air a grievance that triggered the resignation in the first place. To be able to maintain good relations with former employers, it is necessary to make the resignation process devoid of ill-feelings and resentment. Employees will never know just how far a good recommendation from a former employer can go unless faced with the situation. It is best therefore for employees not to completely burn bridges with previous employers.

Dear Mr. or Ms. X:

It is with much regret that I am informing you that I am resigning from my position as Marketing Executive of ABC Company. My last day of employment will be on August 30. I have accepted a new position at DEF Enterprises.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the opportunities that have been made available to me during my tenure here in this company. I have gained valuable experience that has admittedly helped me gain the knowledge and skills that I have now. The time however for me to move on and pursue other opportunities in my career has come. Having been a very supportive employer for the past five years, you have made sure that I will leave with nothing but good memories of my stay with the company.

Please let me know how I can be of help in the transition.

Very truly yours, Signature Name
